Rosacea - The Real Picture! |
|
 |
Rosacea is a disorder of the blood vessels. Approximately half of the world population suffers from it. However, most of the times, the redness of the skin and the little swellings are often mistaken for a lack of hygiene. And by the time, Rosacea is actually diagnosed, the problem has already aggravated.
Moreover, there are quite a few other disorders that people often confuse with Rosacea. For instance, acne vulgaris is a skin disorder that may co-exist with Rosacea. Same is the case with another skin problem called Seborrheic Dermatitis. It's highly essential that treatment for Rosacea must not be ignored while treating Acne Vulgaris or Seborrheic Dermatitis.
A better understanding and identification of the symptoms may result into a timely and also better cure of Rosacea.
Symptoms
Though Rosacea may affect the entire body, these are the cheeks, nose and forehead that are affected the most. The skin is reddened. At times, the condition may worsen, changing the color of the skin up to the ears, chest and the neck. In some cases, even the scalp is not spared. As the problem gets more intense, the change of the color may become permanent.
Under extreme conditions, even the blood vessels get visible on the skin surface. Little bumps appear on the skin. At times, they may be filled with pus. There is a burning sensation. The eyes too, are gritty. Noses are swollen in the shape of a bulb. |

Symptoms Vary According to Various Forms of Rosacea
Though there are 4 different forms of Rosacea, it's not uncommon for the patient to suffer from more than once. The symptoms vary according to the various forms.
Ocular Rosacea - There is severe irritation in the eyes and over the eyelids. They turn red and dry.
Phymatous Rosacea - It affects the complete face including nose, ears, cheeks, forehead, chin and the eyes. Phymatous Rosacea is also connected with a few other disorders such as rhinophyma. It's a nose disfunction disorder where the patent's nose is quite enlarged. Besides, irregular surfaces may appear on the skin. It makes the skin quite ugly as these growths look like little nodes and the entire effected skin is thickened. The blood vessels are also quite visible on the surface of the skin.
Papulopustular Rosacea - This type of Rosacea is quite often mistaken for acne despite the fact that the skin becomes permanently red whereas this is not the case with acne. With Papulopustular Rosacea, papules i.e., red pus filled bumps appear on the skin. Though the bumps dissolve within 5 stays, the redness of the skin called erythema is permanent. The skin also itches quite badly and there is a burning sensation as well.
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea - It causes telangiectasias and the blood vessels appear rather too prominently on the surface of the skin.
Who Suffers the Most?
Rosacea may be hereditary as people with fair skin suffer from the problem the most. Usually people with a Celtic descent suffer from the problem the most. The Europeans are also among the sufferers.
People of both the genders and all the age groups suffer from the problem. However, middle aged women are more vulnerable to Rosacea.
Rosacea Treatment – Keep the Ailment under Control
Though Rosacea cannot be cured, it can be controlled. It's a disorder of the blood vessels, but it affects the skin in one of the worst possible ways. The treatment and the symptoms vary depending upon various types of Rosacea.
However, some of the symptoms are common to all the types. The affected skin is reddened. Swellings appear in the form of nodes. There is a burning sensation. And blood vessels are visible on the skin surface under extreme conditions.
Proper Rosacea Treatment is Often Delayed due to Improper Diagnosis
Proper treatment is often delayed due to improper diagnosis. Usually the redness of the skin and nodular swellings are mistaken for lack of hygiene. Besides, the ailment also co-exists with a number of other skin problems.
No wonder, it's often confused with Acne Vulgaris especially in the case of Papulopustular Rosacea. Another skin problem called Seborrheic Dermatitis also confuses even the dermatologists while diagnosis. Further, Phymatous Rosacea is closely connected to Rhinophyma.
Obviously unless and until, Rosacea is diagnosed, the patient fails to get the proper treatment. And by the time, the ailment has been identified correctly, the problem has worsened!
Rosacea Treatment
Dermatologists suggest various types of Rosacea treatments
Electric Needles - Cutting the redder spider veins with electric needles or Laser therapy considerably reduces the redness of the skin.
Antibiotics - These are used to cure pustules. Pustules are the little inflamed swellings that appear on the skin. Doctors often prescribe antibiotics and anti inflammatory ointments to soothe them. However, it must be remembered that Rosacea pustules are not to be confused with either Acne Vlgaris or acne of any other type.
Some of the antibiotics used for Rosacea treatment are Erythromycin, Doxycicline, Tetracycline and Minocycline. Creams, peels, and washes that contain Glycoic Acid also help cure the pimples that appear due to Rosacea.
The patients must use the Glycoic Acid products only as advised by the dermatologist. Usually, the peels are to be used only once every three weeks. An overuse may further redden the skin. Moving out in the sun must be avoided at least till the time the redness disappears.
Rosacea treatment also employs Isotrentinoin under extreme cases. It minimizes the affected skin area and reduces the nodular formations.
The Best Rosacea Treatment - Avoid the Causes
As permanent cure for Rosacea is not possible, it's best to avoid the cause. Both the doctors and the patients must try to find what has worsened the condition. If the causes are identified and the treatment begins at time, the patient may be saved from Rhinophema or Teleangiectasie. A quick and effective treatment may reduce the intensity of the problem to a great extent.
In the advanced stages of Rosacea when the problem gets rather extreme, specific methods may be applied that may vary from topic and oral products to laser therapy as in the case of Teleangiectasie. Laser surgery is also used in the case of Rhinophema. If the problem is too complicated, a combination of various Rosacea treatments is also used. |
